I went to reception and they swopped the room without fuss and was given a room overlooking the gardens. Don''t get me wrong, the previous room was nice think but the view just lacked!! There was a wedding on at the hotel so quite busy but that added to the atmosphere. We then headed upto the claret jug for a drink and again had a fun time. Quieter than the champagne bar but the golfers were snowed off so no one in there, but maybe if golf was in play then it may have been busier. The staff again very friendly and let me choose my table for the evening. We could not eat in the hotel as the restaurant was all booked up.
Saying that we loved the claret jug. We then headed back to the hotel after the eveing meal and there was a Take that tribute on in one of the suites but sold out.
However a lovely Manager said we could watch it from the doors. A few guests were told we could do this and we so appreicated it. The staff could not do more for you. Breakfast plentiful and very sophisticated surroundings. We loved the break and will be going back. Yes it is expensive but most good hotels are.
If you do not like your room, what is the harm in asking to swop. If you don't ask in life you don't get. We were polite with staff and they were more than polite with us. I would totally recommend. If you are lucky enough to get a deal then the better for it. Enjoy x. My wedding reception was held at Oulton Hall in late March, and whilst the wedding day itself was absolutely wonderful, our experience of the hotel itself were mixed, with some wonderful highlights, but some distinct lows. So, my experiences as a guest rather than bride: Oulton Hall is a beautiful building, and the main reception and bar areas are stunning.
The hotel has a large modern extension that contains most of the rooms, and then the suites are in the older part of the house. The night before the wedding I stayed in a twin room and ate in the restaurant with family. The room was pleasant, clean, nicely furnished, and the beds were very soft and comfy. I only realised as I got into bed that the pillows and duvet were feather which I'm allergic to , and whilst they brought some standard ones up on request, I was surprised that there weren't spares in the wardrobe - many people don't like feathers.
We were slightly disappointed that the room didn't have a DVD player, as we'd brought a cheesy movie to watch, I thought that they were pretty standard these days. The bathroom was fine, although uncomfortably hot, for some reason the mirror was heated and you couldn't turn it off! The air-con was also iffy, very slow to respond, and the next morning the room was so warm that despite the fact that it was snowing outside, we had to have the window open!
The rooms have menus hanging on the doors, and to request breakfast in the room you just hang them on the door before 3am, which worked well for us because we didn't spot the option til after midnight. The night of the wedding we staying in one of the Suites Broughton? High ceilings and lovely views from the window, a real treat.
The room was quite cold, as old sash windows were no double glazed, but it was a bit of a relief after the boiling room the night before. We woke up the morning after the wedding and were bereft at the thought of having to check out, so when we went to breakfast my husband asked whether or not there was an availability that night in a standard room, but only if we could have the wedding rate again, as the standard rate was rather steep. The suite sitting room was lovely to sit and read a book, and I did a bit of nosing and watching the next day's wedding arriving. I'd taken a book down with me, but it was very cold in the pool area, and there were only three reciners, all of which were damp with towels left on them.
The changing rooms were also very cold, quite dirty and messy, with towel bins overflowing. They also had no signposting, so it took me a while to figure out how to get to the pool! The restaurant food is good, though a little overpriced, and the staff very obliging - I didn't like the sauce with my fish, and they brought me an alternative free of charge.
The service is mixed too: booking a table in the restaurant was laughable; checking on my reservations for the night of the wedding had me transferred through four different people; my dad got stuck in the lift and the reception staff seemed to find it quite amusing. But then, there were the odd gem: the restaurant manager, Wes the events manager, and some of the reception staff. So, as I said, mixed!!

Essentially, the hotel is good, but it feels let down by bad management, and a few unprofessional members of staff, which I suppose is inevitable in a large chain. From the reviews you'll mainly see that those who were there on bargain deals loved it, but those that paid full price felt let down, and I think that's a good guide. Go on a Group-on, but don't pay full price, it's not quite worth it.
A stunning setting for a special occasion without too much pomp. Afternoon tea was special with the silver service and good old fashoned tea leaves. There were more cakes than you could shake a stick at if you could not eat them all they were packed up in a box for you to take home for later. Polite staff and excellent service. Everything about this hotel is top notch. Reception staff very welcoming and leisure facilities were super and extremely clean.
